The first comprehensive global index of movers and shakers in educational technology has been created by WISE, the World Innovation Summit for Education, and EdTechXGlobal, who organize both the EdTechXEurope and EdTechXAsia conferences that focus on educational technology.

The Makers and Shakers of Education Technology Index recognizes the 50 most innovative leaders in EdTech, organized by geographic region, including Europe, the Americas, MENA, and Asia.  This year, the index honors those who have used digital and physical technologies to create new ways of learning and who introduce them through play, construction, or interactive design.

“This Index seeks to recognise thinkers and doers who have pioneered innovative approaches to addressing challenges in education”, said Stavros N. Yiannouka, the CEO of WISE.

While EdTechXGlobal and WISE created the initial list of 25 names per region, final decisions pertaining to who would be on it were made by a global advisory committee of 15 individuals, including industry leaders from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Google for Education, IDEO, IBIS Capital, Kaizen Private Equity, Learn Capital, LinkedIN, Times Higher Education and TES Global.

International media partners such as Business Week MENA, l’Etudiant, JMDedu, LinkedIN and TES also helped in the decision-making process and will work to display the leaders across the world.

Each candidate received a score by the committee obtained through a number of criteria, which each criterion receiving a score between one and four.  These included individual vision, or a unique plan for the role of technology in education; disruptive innovation, meaning the initiatives introduced by the individual show innovation and offer a disruptive solution to an educational challenge; and impact and contribution, in that the individual has been recognized as having as positive impact within the field.

Those considered to be “Makers” were thought to be rising stars in the field of education technology who were shown to push boundaries.  Meanwhile, “Shakers” included those were already established leaders in the field who continued to inspire change throughout the world.

“The Makers & Shakers of Education Technology is a global index that elevates Education innovators and thought leaders as 21st Century social rock stars. The index rewards talent, creativity, impact and influence in education,” added Benjamin Vedrenne-Cloquet, Co-Founder of EdTechXGlobal.

Those on the list will be invited to attend a networking and celebratory dinner in London.  In addition, they will be able to participate in the EdTechXEurope conference, to be held at Kings Place later this June.

EdTechXGlobal summits offer opportunities for executive level investors, innovators, and industry influencers from worldwide education technology companies to come together and network.  The conferences in London and Singapore also aim to bring together leading foundations, higher-education institutions, policy makers, and thought leaders from the industry.

The World Innovation Summit for Education was launched in 2009 by Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, its chairperson.  WISE is looked upon as an international reference offering new approaches to education, pushing innovation and partnership.
