Xiaomi has introduced a new series of MITUwatch smartwatches for children in China that offer useful safety features with an adorable look.

Called Mi Bunny in China, not only does the watch come with the same technology available in other smartwatches available for children, such as GPS, GPRS, and Bluetooth, but it also includes an SOS button for emergencies.  When pressed, details concerning the child’s location are sent out to parents along with seven seconds of recording the environment.

The watch also features an audio recording button and is SIM compatible for making voice calls, writes Vincent Lanaria for Tech Times.

MITUwatch comes preloaded with 10 Yuan for making calls, which cost 0.1 Yuan per minute of usage.  Data plans also come with an additional cost of 0.1 Yuan per MB.  The device features an LED dot matrix display meant for the entertainment of the wearer.

The smartwatch also features an alarm system that notifies parents when children walk out of a designated safety zone that can be set up to include any area the parent wishes.  Parents are also able to load up to 12 emergency contacts into the watch, reports Anusha Asif for Tech News Today.

Coming pre-installed with Android 4.2 or iOS 8, the watch has the ability to be upgraded to later versions of the OS once they become available.  The watch, which comes in either pink or blue, weighs just 37 grams and is made of plastic and silicon in order to ensure no irritation on children’s skin.  In addition, no radiation is given off.

The watch features a 300 mAh battery, allowing the device to stay in standby mode for up to six days, or stay charged for up to two days of regular usage.

Mi Bunny is geared toward children five and above who travel to school or other long distances with family or friends.

The watch is already available for purchase on the Xiaomi Global website with a price tag of $ 59.

The company is also releasing a wearable smartwatch for adults called the Xiaomi Mi smartwatch.  The device is expected to work with the MIUI 8 OS, the latest mobile OS available from the tech company.

Xiaomi’s co-founder Liu De has confirmed that the watch will be released soon.  While no official word has been said concerning the release date, analysts believe it will be available in the second half of 2016.  However, the company is currently in the midst of production issues, so investors believe there will be a delay.

No statement was given about any specifics for the watch.  Although the company typically uses Android, avoiding Google services, it is not yet known if it will use Android Wear, writes Jane Danes for Social Barrel.

The company has previously released other wearable devices, including a fitness tracker called Xiaomi Band.  The Band 2 is expected to be released in a couple of weeks offering users additional on-screen details.  While the older version came with heart rate sensors and a battery life of up to three weeks, the newer version is expected to include a better screen but reduced battery life.
