Golfweek Wrapped 2025 (LIV Golf): Mickelson asked Masters or LIV MIami?
Yes, Brooks Koepka made the jump from LIV Golf, and yes, the TV ratings are still woefully small, but the league is still preparing for another season in 2026, a pivotal year that’s scheduled to begin in Saudi Arabia in February..
While Koepka’s move was likely the most impactful story, what were those that you read? Each year, we finish off the calendar with a deep dive into the numbers, a look at the posts that got the most clicks.
Here’s a look at the five LIV Golf stories you came to us for in 2025.
1. Adam Scott confirms what has been widely reported about PGA Tour, LIV Golf unification
(Note: This was also the top story in the PGA Tour section of our website.)
Adam Scott confirmed what has widely been reported: there’s little movement in efforts to reunify men’s professional golf.
As a member of the PGA Tour’s policy board, Scott has had a front row seat in the negotiations between the Tour and Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund, the financial backer of LIV Golf. Scott participated in the talks earlier this year, which were orchestrated by U.S. President Donald Trump, at the White House.
2. These LIV Golf players were relegated from the league, including a team captain
The LIV Golf regular season is over, which means a handful of golfers were relegated from the league Sunday.
There are three zones in the LIV Golf standings: Lock Zone, Open Zone and Relegation. The top 24 in the season-long standings will secure spots for next year, with final standings determined after LIV Golf Indianapolis. Those finishing Nos. 25-48 are in the Open Zone, which means these players can stay in the league, but their current team doesn’t have to re-sign them if they have an expiring contract.
3. Fred Couples says Brooks Koepka wants back on PGA Tour, but not room for other LIV golfers
Fred Couples has been one of the more vocal PGA Tour players in opposition to LIV Golf.
Couples is as interested as the next player to learn how things play out. But Couples, speaking on a radio show on Thursday, said he knows five-time major champion Brooks Koepka is anxious to return to the PGA Tour but isn’t sure how many LIV players will be welcomed back. (This proved to be accurate.)
4. Former LIV Golf winner rips league, says new goal is chasing PGA Tour card
Eugenio Chacarra has a new professional goal: to play on the PGA Tour.
There’s an issue, though. His first three years as a professional have been played on the LIV Golf League. After not being re-signed, he has to find a new home for 2025, and if he wants to play in a PGA Tour-sanctioned event, he has to wait a year since his last LIV event to be eligible for status on the PGA Tour.
5. Phil Mickelson was asked (seriously) whether he’d rather win the Masters or LIV Miami
Ah, the questions professional golfers sometimes face.
Phil Mickelson has played well at LIV Golf Miami, and sat just three shots off the lead at Trump National Doral..
Incredibly, during a press conference, Mickelson was asked this question after the first round of play.
