We love winners, don't we? Boy, do we love winners. We love to watch them win, and then we love to watch them fall because both represent the dramatic ends of the sports-consumption spectrum. Tiger Woods is the most obvious example of this, but it's prevalent across all sports in all eras. The problem in golf is that we overvalue winning. We disproportionately assign labels to golfers based on how little they do or don't win based on how much we've seen athletes in other sports win. If LeBron James has a career .650 winning percentage, we presume the best golfer in the world should win at the same clip. The reality is a little different. The best golfer in the world (currently Dustin Johnson)
