IN HINDSIGHT, it was probably a mistake letting the 13-year-old have an espresso. Despite rising at dawn, he’s bouncing off the narrow, graffitied walls of Spaccanapoli like a space hopper on helium. It was my fault. As our plane approached the sweep of the Bay of Naples, wispy clouds parading as smoke hovered ominously over Vesuvius’s crater. I whispered, “Look, darling, the volcano’s smoking…” and my poor boy, wide-eyed with fear, needed something stiff to revive him.
