Kamaru Usman: 'I'm the best test' for Islam Makhachev
LAS VEGAS – Kamaru Usman remains adamant that he should be next for UFC welterweight champion Islam Makhachev.
Usman (21-4 MMA, 16-3 UFC), a former title holder at 170 pounds, continues to campaign for a shot at what once was his – the UFC welterweight belt, which is now held my Makhachev. Usman has been very vocal about wanting to get another shot at gold following his decision win over Joaquin Buckley last June. Not only does he want a chance to further his already robust legacy, but he also believes he’s the toughest test for the champion out of all the top contenders.
“There’s been no conversations, but it’s not a secret how I feel about Islam,” Usman told MMA Junkie and other reporters. “I like Islam. I feel he’s a great, great champion, but I also feel I’m the best test in the division for him. It’s almost kind of weird that I’m having to sell myself on my skill level and on who I am and what I’ve done in the sport. It’s a little weird, but that’s the name of the game. It’s ‘what have you done for me lately.’ Hopefully the UFC sees that and gives me that opportunity for me to go out there and show that I’m still the best in the world.”
Usman, although a historic figure at welterweight, has won only one fight in the last four years, and he’s 1-3 in his past four. Meanwhile, there are top contenders such as Michael Morales, who’s unbeaten, and Ian Machado Garry, who’s built an impressive resume in recent years. It’s unknown what direction the UFC will go with Makhachev’s first title defense as welterweight champion.
Should the UFC go with Usman, the Nigerian fighter is ready to throw down whenever needed.
“I have no idea, but when it comes to me, the UFC knows that I always deliver for them whether it’s four days, six days or two weeks, I’m the guy to call. We’ll see.”
